It goes without any doubt that watches by Jaeger-LeCoultre have every right to be called horological masterpieces. It is not surprising that many of them were awarded with various prestigious watchmaking prizes. The new watch by the legendary Swiss brand makes no exception from this list – presented at SIHH 2010, Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication is worthy of admiration of watch collectors and connoisseurs no less than its predecessors.
Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication watch is an astronomical watch - suffice it to have a quick glance at the dial to understand why. The dark blue enamel dial of the novelty reminds the sky of stars. The idea itself is not new – before Jaeger-LeCoultre this theme was used by Patek Philippe, Cartier, Ulysse Nardin, Bovet and others. But this doesn’t belittle the advantages of the Jaeger-LeCoultre watch.
The case of the new timepiece is crafted from white or rose gold. And the transparent back case shows the work of the complicated movement – the massive in-house calibre with manual winding. The movement consists of 527 components and each part is made, assembled and decorated by hand. The COSC certified calibre provides power reserve for 48 hours and animates the functions of hours and minutes, flying rotating tourbillon, the star map, minute repeater with the cathedral gongs, Zodiac and month indication and 24-hours scale.
The new Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication by Jaeger-LeCoultre features several innovations. For example, in order to achieve better sound from the minute repeater the watchmakers used a new sound amplifier – “the crystal gong”. The flying tourbillon together with its function of gravity compensation serves as an element of the perpetual calendar. The rotating tourbillon carriage serves as the indicator of Zodiac constellations and makes one turn is 24 hours showing the difference between the solar and sidereal days. The dial of the novelty is protected with sapphire crystal. Water resistance is 50 meters.
The new Jaeger-LeCoultre horological masterpiece is secured on the wrist with a crocodile leather strap fitted with a white or rose gold clasp. The timepiece is produced in a limited edition of 75 copies.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso 101 Art Deco with the Anniversary Calibre

This year the famous watchmaking brand Jaeger-LeCoultre is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its legendary Calibre 101 created in 1929. Then the company launched the smallest watch in the world created on the basis of the calibre Duoplan Jaeger-LeCoultre (1924).
The watch became really popular after the British Queen Elizabeth II wore it during the ceremony of coronation on June 2, 1953. Decades after the Calibre 101 still remains one of the most impressing creations in the world of watchmaking. Each calibre comprising 98 parts measures only 0.2 cubic cm in volume and weighs only 1 gram. The movement is really unique as all the parts of it are made at order and are applicable only for this type of movement.
This year in honour of the anniversary of the legendary calibre Jaeger-LeCoultre produced a new collection of timepieces equipped with this famous movement. The collection includes several unique models (both replicas of previous models and new ones) - Joaillerie 101 1938, Joaillerie 101 Feuille, Joaillerie 101 Nodo, Joaillerie 101 Resille. And all these timepieces are powered by the legendary 101 Calibre created in 1929.
But the two models – male one and female one – deserve special attention. Grande Reverso 101 Art Deco watch boasts the movement fixed on the sapphire matrix so that there is an impression that the famous Calibre 101 flies above the mother-of-pearl surface. The movement is fixed on the transparent sapphire crystal and is not connected with the crown, which should be got out of the case to make time adjustments.
The cases of both versions are made of white gold. The female version is decorated with diamonds cut in Art Deco style.

Three Legends: “Wall Street”, Michael Douglas and Reverso

The majority of our readers certainly watched the legendary Oscar-bearing “Wall Street” movie where the director shows how the cult of money destroys human’s personality. The part of one of the main characters, Gordon Gekko, was brilliantly performed by Michael Douglas. 15 years later Oliver Stone decided to revive the plot and made a continuation of the film under the title “Wall Street: money never sleeps”. The new movies stars young actors Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin and, surely, invariable charismatic Michael Douglas.
The accessory adorning the wrist of Gordon Gekko also remained invariable – the character is loyal to his usual Reverso by Jaeger-LeCoultre. But this is not surprising. In the world of watches this timepiece is as popular and legendary as the “Wall Street” movie in the world of cinematography.
By the way, many colleagues of Michael Douglas support him in his liking for Jaeger-LeCoultre watches: the character of Robert Downy Jr. in the “Iron Man” wears three watches by this reputable Swiss watchmaking brand.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos 566

The watchmaking company Jaeger-LeCoultre proudly presents a new timepiece. But this time it is not a sophisticated wristwatch but a clock designed by the famous talented designer Mark Newson.
The Atmos 566 clock is a beautiful timepiece made of blue baccarat crystal. The clock is powered by the new Jaeger-LeCoultre movement calibre 566 with an interesting winding system that depends on the air temperature fluctuations. It is amazing but the clock is able to work without breaks during the whole period of its lifetime – the only condition for that is the 2 degrees change of temperature every two days. Besides standard functions the clock shows the star map with constellations.
According to Mark Newson he has always considered a timepiece to be a little universe. He said: “Atmos 566 has its own sky of stars. It is a wonderful and mysterious object. Even time itself has no power over it.”
The clock will be produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre in a limited edition of 48 copies in transparent crystal and 28 pieces – in blue crystal.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Protects World Heritage

On March 18-24, 2010, the well-known watchmaking brand Jaeger-LeCoultre held the second on-line auction whose gain was transferred to the account of the UNESCO World Heritage. All the money fetched during the auction will be invested in the preservation of the world’s biggest territory occupied by mango tangle – the Sunbardan forest in India which was included in the list of world heritage in 1987.
This year the highlight of the auction was the Geophysic E168 chronometer of 1958 that was tested “in the field” by the mountaineer Stephen Schaffter during the recent expedition organized by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The back case of the watch shows an engraving: “Geophysic Expedition; Mt Antoine LeCoultre, 6589m, Himalayas, October 22, 2009”.
