During the charity auction that started on May 13 and will end on June 19 the renowned watchmaking company Maurice Lacroix presents three unique models of watches. The three timepieces were created in cooperation with three designers. The money fetched by the pieces unique will be transferred to charity organizations chosen by the designers.

The designer Arik Levi gave his model the name of Raw and Essential. The watch features engraved hour markers for the first and second time zones on the “protected” dark dial. The designer plans to transfer the money to a charity organization Sinjiya-Ton, which helps children in Mali.

The designer Gvenael Nicholas reflected in his watch the idea of the endlessness of a circle using 5 circles for the decoration of the dial. Besides, the additional subdial is adorned with stars. The money fetched by the watch during the auction will be given to the Doctors Without Borders.

The Bonded Watch by Neil Barett is probably the most original timepiece among the three owing to the dial covered by black leather. Mr. Barett have chosen the international charity organization Oxfam as the beneficiary.

On May 7, 2010, the reputable auction house of Patrizzi & Co organized an important event whose highlight was the most important horological document – 354 pages of Abraham Breguet’s notes. Five years before his death the legendary watchmaker began to set down his horological memoirs for posterity. He dictated all his horological experience, innovations and secrets to his assistant Louis Moinet. It was intended to be a book like no other that had ever been produced. Simply written, it offered in-depth explanations from which other watchmakers could learn and understand Breguet’s secrets, and from which they could incorporate his experiences and ideas into their own work. The recent discovery of this work completely changes our understanding of the history of horology and our attitudes to and knowledge of watchmaking.

The important lot was purchased by Dr Nicolas Hayek, president and CEO of Montres Breguet S.A., for the Breguet museum. Breguet’s notes fetched the record-breaking CHF 2.3 million.

During the bidding, this historic manuscript was offered provisionally as seven separate lots. The bidding was feverish and fierce and quickly arrived at more than four times the lot’s initial estimate. This phenomenon was repeated with each lot in the manuscript group, with several of the lots, in particular lots 315 and 316, which cover Breguet’s thoughts on the tourbillion and Marine chronometers respectively, achieving more than eight times their initial estimate.

On March 18-24, 2010, the well-known watchmaking brand Jaeger-LeCoultre held the second on-line auction whose gain was transferred to the account of the UNESCO World Heritage. All the money fetched during the auction will be invested in the preservation of the world’s biggest territory occupied by mango tangle – the Sunbardan forest in India which was included in the list of world heritage in 1987.

This year the highlight of the auction was the Geophysic E168 chronometer of 1958 that was tested “in the field” by the mountaineer Stephen Schaffter during the recent expedition organized by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The back case of the watch shows an engraving: “Geophysic Expedition; Mt Antoine LeCoultre, 6589m, Himalayas, October 22, 2009”.

Recently the well-known and reputable auction house of Antiquorum has finished its March auction event dedicated to the rare and important timepieces. The auction was held in the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva on March 22, 2010, and fetched impressive sum of $ 6,636,422. Of the 466 lots offered at auction, 83% were sold representing 110% by value.

The auction enjoyed lively telephone and Internet bidding in addition to room bidding that came from across the globe including the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Italy, China and Switzerland.

One of the highlights of the auction in Geneva (both in design and price) has become Patek Philippe Le Tour du Monde de Magellan clock (lot 231) named after the circumnavigation of the legendary discoverer Ferdinand Magellan. The clock was created by Patek Philippe in 1971 to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Magellan’s death day. The desk clock is an electronic-mechanical gadget that is powered by the solar batteries and decorated with enamel images showing the scenes from the Portuguese discoverer’s travel. The clock was bought by an anonym Asian collector for $ 164,445 by phone bidding.

The next Antiquorum auction dedicated to watches will be held on May 8 and 9, 2010, in Geneva.

The renowned auction house of Antiquorum is glad to announce and interesting watch auction that will be held in New York on March 10-12, 2010. The event is dedicated to the unique collection of timepieces gathered by the French-American artist Pierre Fernandez Arman, one of the founders of the new realism trend in painting. Pierre Fernandez Arman has become widely known owing to his exhibitions where he was breaking, tearing, cutting and blowing with dynamite his works of art as well as to his objects of art made of polyester and plexiglass, massive sculptures and installations made of piles of identical objects. Arman was a very passionate collector – his collection includes not only timepieces but also radio sets, cars, pistols, African carving, Japanese armours, etc.

Among the highlight of the Antiquorum’s watch auction there are such timepieces as Patek Philippe Ref. 2459 Devil’s Horns, Minerva chronograph and 1940s Vacheron Constantin Ref. 3681 Black Mystery.
