Metiers d’Art Tribute to Great Explorers 2008
September 2, 2008
Four years after the first release of the legendary Patrimony Explorers series created in honor of great explorers Vacheron Constantin presents two new models dedicated to Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus.
The main zest of this limited edition collection is doubtlessly magnificent complicated movement and the art of enamelling. The series of new timepieces is limited to 60 copies of each.
Both of the new Vacheron Constantin watches are distinguished by their extraordinary grand feu polychrome enameled gold dials whose exceptionally challenging execution by an enamel master reveals the historical routes charted by Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Adding to the great difficulty of producing each dial - which can require over 30 individual kiln firings - is the two-part design, which is carried out on two different levels to accommodate the unique satellite time display.
The stylized map is protected by the sapphire crystal. The case is made of 18-carat yellow gold and is 40 mm in diameter and 12.2 mm thick. The automatic calibre Vacheron 1126AT (36 stones) features the 28,800 vph balance frequency and 40 hours power reserve. 12 hour-marks appear by turn in the 132 grades wide lower sector indicating the current time at the minute scale. The key to the functionality of this mechanism is an hour wheel with three arms and an hour crown and a Maltese cross cam which orient the hour satellites properly and ensure that they travel precisely across the 60-minute scale.
Both new watches are fitted with hand-sewn alligator straps as well as an 18K gold folding clasp whose closed profile presents the Maltese cross - the famous symbol of the Vacheron Constantin brand.
