The first company to show activity at BaselWorld this year was the Swiss watch company Favre-Leuba: its presentation took place before the official opening of the fair and the obligatory press-conference. This company produces very original sporty watches. The model Bathy V2, presented at the fair is not only a sport-looking watch. It features such a unique module as a mechanical depthometer and can measure the depth up to 45 meters. All Favre-Leuba watches are notable for an interesting thought-out design and an elaboration of details.
As far as the press-conference is concerned there wasn’t anything extraordinary at it. The journalists were one more time told about the future reorganization of the exhibition complex (that is to be finished by 2012); the leaders of Swiss watch industry reported on their successes and expressed hope for the bright future of BaselWorld.
Black Trend
Black color has become a trend in watchmaking this year. And many companies at BaselWorld 2008 prove it. For example black has become one of the basic colors in watch collections by Edox. At the press-day the company showed the journalists its new Class One, Class Royale and new women watches. Edox timepieces become larger, the materials become more expensive, and the design – more refined.

But the Perrelet company decided that they had produced enough black models last year (by the way the have become the bestsellers of the brand). This year the company paid more attention to its women models. Being true to its principles Perrelet made them automatic on the basis of the company’s famous movement with double rotor. The front rotor is made in shape of a flower and is decorated with rubies and diamonds.

RSW is one more brands following Black Trend. It is one of the world’s most interesting designer brands: practically each year it received different international designer awards. Its new model Outland is very likely to become the winner of the RedDot or Grand Prix Geneva.

The black-and-white color of the novelty by Carl F. Bucherer is perfectly supplemented by the red color of the indices. This watch is interesting not only for its design but also for its functionality: it shows time in three time zones at once. An aperture at the side of the case allows to watch the work of the movement.
But the most long-awaited premiere of the first day was of course Memoire 1 by Maurice Lacroix ( see A Watch to Remember at www.timebooth.com): the first mechanical watch with memory in the history.
