Gdansk - treasury of ancient clocks
August 31, 2006
I want to share my impressions about the fabulous clocks that I saw in Gdansk, Poland while traveling. The first one I was shown at the Long Market Street, the clock is mounted on the Main Town Hall. The building itself is an example of the Renaissance style and was erected in the Middle Ages. The most outstanding feature of this clock is the corillion. There are not many of these mechanisms left in Europe. The peculiarity is that when the clock strikes beautiful music sounds. It is created by bells set in the Main Town Hall. The sound is so pure and sonorous that you stop to listen to this beauty.
The other miracle that I liked in this city was the astronomical clock in St. Mary Church. Hans Duringer created the clock in the fifteenth century. The marvelous device was reconstructed after the Second World War and still indicates the time, date, phase of the moon and the position of signs of the zodiac. The clock is decorated with figures of 12 apostles, Adam and Eve. There’s a legend that the Polish king liked the creation so much that he ordered the master not to repeat the construction anywhere else. But the watchmaker couldn’t promise this. Then, according to one version, the king blinded the master. Others say that the watchmaker left the city and nobody knows his fate. Anyway now we are thankful to our ancestor that we can admire this masterpiece.

No Pointer, Just a Gravity - Defying Red Ball
August 29, 2006
Nowadays there are too many clock gadgets on the market already, but this one’s pretty unique.

There’s no pointer, just a gravity - defying red ball that presumably is magnetic and follows a magnetised rotor underneath the dial.
The clock was designed by an Israel student. He has won many awards for his designs. Go to the online gallery of his award winning designs.

Alarm Clock Which Can Cook

Look at this amazing device! The alarm clock which wakes you up not with a disgusting song but with a sound of roasting bacon!
This won`t be flavorings but real bacon. It`s time to ask how it works! A frozen piece of bacon is put into a special compartment before going to bed. The gadget needs 10 minutes to cook the bacon. That`s why you set the time ten minutes earlier than when you want to be woken up. At the set time the device turns on two halogen lamps inside of it and they cook your bacon.
