When you push a special button, for instance, of minute-repeater you will hear one after another a certain number of low frequency sounds (hours), then double sounds of high and low frequencies (quarters) and finally sounds of high frequency (minutes).

All you have to do is to count. Seven low frequency sounds, one double sound and three high frequency sounds – 7:18. If you turn on ‘grand strike’ mode hours and quarters will play automatically. If you turn minute-repeater in ‘lesser strike’ mode the watch will automatically play just hours.

The quality and beauty of the sound in a complicated watch depends on the steel and sound technology applied. The famous watch companies (”Audemars Piguet”, “Vacheron Constantin”, “Patek Philippe”) research this a lot.

In 1892 Audemars Piguet designed its first repeater wrist watch. In 1998 they presented a most compact woman repeater watch: with 340 parts and a size of a wedding ring. The watch is made of 18 carat red gold.

In 1914 Patek Philippe presented a pocket watch with complications in Bern. Complications: repeater, chronograph, calendar, moon phase. Each complication had its own wind mechanism and power reserve indicator. In 2000 the company designed Star Calibre 2000 with Grand Sonnerie repeater. The watch plays Bog-Bang melody – for the first time watch designers added the required number of gongs.

Five-minute-repeater - plays every five minutes and hour with different pitch sounds.
Minute-repeater - plays every quarter and minute with different pitch sounds.

Grande Sonnerie – repeater automatically plays hours and quarters, repeat number of hours every quarter and quarters and minutes at request.

Petite Sonnerie – repeater automatically plays hours and quarters, but does not repeat number of hours every quarter.
