Andreas Strehler

Andreas Strehler is one of the world’s most original watchmakers. He is one of those masters who take care of all the stages of the watchmaking process: in his mind a concept is born, and through his skilled hands, the concept manifests into something rarely seen in today's horology, that is, something new and unique.

Andreas Strehler was born in January 1971. With a father who was once a machinist and now a clockmaker, it is no surprise he is a watchmaker. He acquired his watchmaker’s education in Watchmaker Apprenticeship at a workshop in Frauenfeld and classes at the Watchmaker school in Solothurn. He started his career at “Renaud et Papi” where he worked as Chief Prototypist for 4 years.

In 1995 Andreas Strehler started his own company as an independent watchmaker. First he specialized in restoring antique Clocks and watches. But already in 1998 he presented his first "Perpetual Calendar" watch (which was a new version of A.L. Breguet's Sympathique) at the prestigious BaselWorld watchmaking show.

Andreas Strehler is the youngest and possibly most forward thinking member of the AHCI. He belongs to the minimalist school: researching the simplest and clearest way for a timepiece to perform its prime purpose.

Strehler’s most intriguing horological demonstration is a symbiotic combination of a pocket-watch and a desk calendar that recalls Abraham-Louis Breguet’s Sympathique watch-and-clock pair. But it is entirely different, with an original twist and a host of clever features. The perpetual-calendar indication is on the desk calendar, but its brain is contained in the detachable pocket-watch, which only shows the time. Put the two together, and a sensing mechanism reads the day, date, month and year from the pocket-watch, updating the indications on the two dials of the desk calendar.

Andreas Strehler makes between three and 10 timepieces a year for private clients, who come to his Winterthur workshops for an original horological solution or a custom watch.
