Catamaran "Wherever there is sport and water..."

1. Would you please tell us something about the history of your company? How you happened to get involved in the watchmaking?

The Swiss watch brand, CATAMARAN, was founded in 1983 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by the Swiss watch factory CONSUL itself founded in 1900.

In fact, at the beginning of the 1980s, a different, fresh, wind was already blowing over the Swiss watch industry, calling for watches that with more character, in response to the demands of sporting and leisure pass-times. Accordingly, Montres CONSUL decided to create a line that harmonised aesthetics with high technology, always concerned to offer an attractive product with a timeless design in answer to the needs of the new clientele.

Elegant and racey, CATAMARAN watches are in the same class as the fast yachts that are out to win. The catamaran is a boat that combines lightness with extreme reliability. This sailboat, with two adjoining hulls, designed by fishermen, came into being on India's eastern coast. The Tamil terms "katta" (link) and "maram" (wood) introduced into the languages of several countries of the world as a type of small craft, which very rapidly became a legend in the records of competition sailing, whose first gold medal was won in 1976 at the Montreal Olympic Games.

Bearing in mind these definitions, it was quite normal that from 1983, Montres CATAMARAN should associate its image with sports and leisure.

All through the 80s, Montres CATAMARAN's sponsorship centred mostly on the world of sailing.

From the 90s, CATAMARAN began to build its long term personality as a watchmaker, which led quite naturally to the expansion of its sponsoring activities. At first in the world of sailing and, from 1994, in the world of motor sports (Formula 1, 24 Hours Le Mans, Rallies, Paris-Dakar, etc).

From year 1995, CATAMARAN added the world of sliding (skiing etc) to its sports, followed in 1998 by the extreme sports (snowboarding, wind-surfing, etc), without forgetting a technical presence, with its timekeeping.

From year 2000, CATAMARAN spread and got involved with additional sports such as Tennis, Ice Hockey, Marathon, Wrestling, Bicycling.

From year 2008, a new collection with automatic movements was introduced within the collection range.

Today it is only logical that Montres CATAMARAN maintains its presence in all of these activities. Thanks to the experience it has acquired in them, it is ready to take up the challenge of the 21st century.

2. What is the essence of the timepiece by your brand? If you were given only three words to characterize your watches what words would you choose?

Sport, outdoor, way of life

3. How much time does it take to create a new timepiece?

18 to 24 months

4. What are the main challenges and problems a watchmaker faces while creating a new watch?

For this type of sport watches, you need to keep in mind the features that are necessary to do your sport, keeping in mind the roughness of that sport and the necessary comfort that you need to run your sport having your watch.

5. What trends in watchmaking seem the most appealing to you?

For this type of watch, it is to make features along with new material.

6. What is your idea of an ideal timepiece?

For this type of watch, it would be a watch that would not need any maintenance.

7. Are there any watchmakers with whom you would like to work together? If you were able to work together with some great watchmaker of the past who would it be?

Not a watchmaker but extreme and elite sportsmen to understand their needs.

8. What are your main markets?

Wherever there is sport and water.

9. What achievement of the nowadays watchmaking seems the most significant to you?

For this type of watch, to understand and fulfill the needs of the people that will use our watches.

10. What are your plans for the future? What we are to expect from your brand next year?

Find new materials and new features. For next year, we would like to consolidate our markets.
