Blu is a new brand but while the brand may be a new one, the technical director, Bernhard Lederer, already had 20 years of experience designing and constructing watches for other firms when he devised the idea for Blu.
Bernhard Lederer started his career in watchmaking at a reputable museum repairing and reconstructing classic, vintage clocks and watches. Each of these timepieces had its own feel for shapes and forms within its preordained artistic period. There was, however, no room for realization of his own ideas within this narrow window of horological artistry.
At that point Bernhard Lederer began to construct his own timepieces according to the ideals and designs of the time periods he was working with. He constructed each component himself, by hand. But he soon came to realize that he needed to invent his own interpretation of time, a modern interpretation to fit the age he lives in.
In the year 2000, Blu company was formed, or to give the brand its complete name – Blu. And from day one, Bernhard Lederer, the brand’s Technical Director, was involved in all aspects of the company’s creative work as well as its production of wristwatches. The first prototypes and watch concepts were presented at Basel in 2001 and anyone visiting the Blu stand was asked for their comments. From these, along with some additional ideas and innovative mechanical movements, Lederer created the first Blu collection for the following year’s show.
